FYI I have the exact same problem, and I am definitely using the current kernel-package in sid:
$ dpkg --list kernel-package . . . ii kernel-package 10.031 A utility for building Linux kernel related Debian packages. Aarre -- Aarre Laakso http://www.laakshmi.com/aarre/
