The versions of trans in Debian jessie, sid and rc-buggy are all broken. This issue has been fixed upstream in version 0.8.23 and this commit: https://github.com/soimort/translate-shell/commit/8354bbe738419d4b1d6ae00d125fb348f76b692d.patch I have tested 0.8.21 with the patch cherry-picked and it works for me. I would suggest uploading 0.8.23 to Debian sid as 0.8.22 will not be migrating to Debian jessie since we are late in the freeze.
