This would seem to suggest that the issue is with either initramfs-tools or, more likely, whichever package provided the zfs hooks for initramfs-tools. I think it is most likely the latter, but I can't find such a package in Debian, are you using some tools from outside of Debian for this setup? i.e. perhaps zfs-initramfs from zfsonlinux.org perhaps? If so then I think your bug is with that software. Certainly I think grub's involvement is long over by the time you get to these sorts of messages.
