However, I gave it back with --extra-depends 'gcc-4.9 (>= 4.9.2-9)' to force an attempt with the latest gcc version (the previous attempts used an older version as the chroots seem to be outdated on those buildds). That attempt also failed, so if it is a compiler bug, it's still present in that version. Another possibility is that the code is wrong (it fails with "Error: offset out of range"), and that newer gcc versions are able to figure out that it's wrong, while older versions weren't.
