Something, then, is adding in this zlib flag incorrectly - it sounds a
bit like bug#337873, but that is fixed as far as I know.
Would it be possible for you to have a look at the various .pc
files on
your system, and see which is requiring -lz?
The only .pc file I have on my system is from hula:
$ locate -r '\.pc$'
/usr/local/src/hula/hula-0.1.0+svn379/hula.pc
