I made a bit of progress diagnosing this. My write up is over here:
https://issues.kolab.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2739#c6 I think kolab is expecting the birthday to be a full date-time stamp, and I think kontact is creating just a date. (I was able to get kontact to create a birthday on the server by importing a vcard file with the bday specified as a date-time stamp.
