No, actually I didn't see that bug (perhaps I've fallen off of 
subscription to the package tracking - will investigate further)

Yes - I have been working on a major internal rewrite of the packaging 
to far better handle changes to versions of languages like with 
bug#743994.  I haven't solved it for Python yet, but instead of getting 
all shiny in one go I will try wrap up what I have and release it later 
today.
