Is this system a pure installation without any additional out-of-release package? You might also be low on diskspace, or on memory, or have and hardware error. Many thing that are possuble. You could try to run the program from the command line - BUT AS *ONE* (as in 1) line (you did it already, but on two lines ...argg) xetex -ini -jobname=xelatex -progname=xelatex -etex xelatex.ini (agian, ONE LINE!!!)
