I tested the patch posted by Loic.
Unfortunately it doesn't fix the cdbs build failures. I still get error
messages like this:

 /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 './avrdude.1'
'/home/michael/debian/build-area/avrdude-5.0/debian/tmp//usr/share/man/man1/avrdude.1'
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/michael/debian/build-area/avrdude-5.0'
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/michael/debian/build-area/avrdude-5.0'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/michael/debian/build-area/avrdude-5.0'
dh_installdirs -pavrdude-doc
make: *** No rule to make target `install', needed by
`binary/avrdude-doc'. Stop.

I'd be interesting to know if cdbs has to be fixed too, or it is solely
a make issue.

Cheers,
Michael
