Aven works fine for me, so "a bug which has a major effect on the
usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to
everyone" seems more appropriate.

Since it works for me and therion does the same (#744793), I suspect
it's an issue with your OpenGL setup.  Were either aven or therion's
viewer working on this machine in a previous version?

Can you try installing "mesa-utils" and seeing if "glxgears" works?
This is a simple opengl demo program, which should display a 3D
animation of some rotating cogs.  If that fails, the problem isn't with
aven or therion, but at a lower level.
