ruby 1.8.2-1 depends on ruby1.8; here:

  ~ # dpkg -l ruby1.8 | grep ii | nth 3
  1.8.2-5
  ~ # dpkg -L ruby | grep bin
  /usr/bin
  /usr/bin/ruby
  
So if you have ruby 1.8.2 installed, you should have /usr/bin/ruby,
unless you manually messed something up :)
