Strange. I'm sure I've built the uploaded 4.4~beta-1 in a pbuilder (but a few days before Perl 5.18 hit unstable) and tested it with the packages provided by Dom that it builds with Perl 5.18. I also remember that error occurring multiple times. Maybe I've not catched all occurrences or forgot one patch when moving the found fixes into the git repository. Since =encoding only pops up under bin/, but nowhere under lib/, that's the most likely case. Anyway, it's now much easier to check and fix and there's either a beta2 or rc1 release (haven't decided yet) pending anyway. So thanks for testing and reporting.
