I can confirm this behavior. Enabling the LDAP authentication causes
ejabberd to crash even if the LDAP server does not support StartTLS
and TLS is explicitly disabled in ejabberd.cfg:
{auth_method, ldap}.
{ldap_servers, ["localhost"]}.
{ldap_encrypt, none}.
{ldap_port, 389}.
