Then that package is not suitable for a stable Debian release.

I think it should – the mere fact *that* this fails as you
said “catastrophically” is a bit fat warning sign.

I’d rather it be withheld from testing/stable until that
is fixed.

I’ve not currently got much time, but when I get some
spare time I can probably help looking at the code and
fix some of the issues.

In traditional syntax ' is ignored, but in c99 everything between two ' is
handled as character constant.  Therefore you cannot use ' in a preproces-
sing file in c99 mode.  -- Ragge
No faith left in ISO C99, undefined behaviour, etc.
