I get the following error with my Samsung Galaxy Note II:

Ditto with mtpfs from testing (mtpfs from unstable is also broken,
but this is another problem).

After searching on Google, I've found:

  http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/bugs/454/

It is claimed to be fixed in GIT:

  http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/bugs/454/?page=2

I haven't tried yet.
