I think the patch for this issue is ready in GIT: git://github.com/anbe42/sendmail.git branch salvage (or bug-681147) No further changes since I first posted this. I just didn't proceed to prepare a NMU and look for a sponsor since there is another RC bug (#684645) that I don't know how to fix.
