I can't reproduce this problem here. For me, it always starts booting. I tried previous version (1.1.0) and there it works too. What's the "minimal" command line to trigger this? Will it happen with simple kvm -nodefaults -serial file:/tmp/serial -nographics -kernel .. -append console=ttyS0 ? Also, does it happen with different guest kernel (-kernel option) ?
