I think the correct place is probably gnome-session-common, since gvfs-open should be used if you are running a GNOME session. Reassigning. In the mean time, there is a generic mechanism in xdg-open which should be used when gvfs-open is unavailable. It seems that the fallback for gnome was lost in some version. I will put it back.
