Maybe there is an issue in my configuration and enigmail is hiding the
error or something - I'm quite happy to look at the issue in more detail
if you can suggest how to proceed

Yes - the machine with squeeze can read all the messages and access all
the sigs

Yes, message source appears the same on both systems
