One thing that's different on the buildds to running the testsuite as a user
is the use of fakeroot, but fakeroot doesn't intercept connect or read as
far as I can see.
I looked at connect, and libc seems to just have a thin wrapper around the
corresponding syscall (and indeed libc never explicitly assigns ECHILD to
errno). In the kernel, the possible control flows seem quite complex, but
I couldn't see where ECHILD might come from.
