As far as I can tell, the conversion programs were working fine with java2 runtimes (gij, a few years ago). However, the graphical interface didn't work (I'm not even sure they work properly with openjdk 6 or 7). I'm unsure splitting out is a good idea at this point, since some programs may depend on libbatik-java to provide rasterize: changing that too close from the freeze isn't a good idea...
