Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.99-15
Severity: grave
Hello,
starting with 1.99-15 grub-pc fails to install:
Setting up grub-pc (1.99-15) ...
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Your core.img is unusually large. It won't fit in
the embedding area..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be
installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are
UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: cannot read `/grub/core.img' correctly.
Generating grub.cfg ...
On reboot the system hangs at "GRUB ".
Downgrading to grub-pc 1.99-14 fixes this.
The size of core.img between 1.99-14 and 1.99-15 increased from 28751
bytes to 33045 bytes.
The system is plain standard MBR with mdraid (plus dm-crypt, but not for
/boot). While 28751 bytes fit well in the typical 62 sectors gap on the
first track, 33045 bytes would require at least 65 sectors.
I can't find any hints in changelog.Debian what's causing this huge size
increase except maybe:
* Build with GCC 4.6 (closes: #654727).
regards
Mario

This was also filed as #662787, and I uploaded 1.99-16 to fix it.
grub2 (1.99-16) unstable; urgency=low
* Backport from upstream:
- Build with -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables to save space (closes:
#662787).
