OK, 1. use apt-get source mozilla-thunderbird to get the source 2. inside the source tree, insert the patch in the debian/patches/ and add the file name to debian/patches/00list (look how the other dpatch files look like) 3. use dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot to build the package (look for the patch getting applied).
