imlib+png2 is just the png2 version of imlib; since png2 (aka png10) is now gone, imlib+png2 is on its way out too.
imlib now provides the necessary libraries (with appropriate new sonames) and gnome-1 (the libraries of which I now maintain) are transitioning. Once everything is transitioned, we plan to file a remove request for imlib+png2. libgnome-dev (1.4.2-24) is now linked against png12.
