In Debian Med some packages that Build-Depend vtk are also beaten by this problem. There was some workaround discussed at http://lists.debian.org/debian-med/2011/07/msg00137.html which might be helpful (or not). I guess this bug can be merged with #629815 (which is in turn merged with 506992, 555185, 630559).
