Note that the problem isn't mips-specific. I reproduced the bug on i386.

Hello, I ran into that myself. The upstream branch has a problem and
already inludes a patch that Andreas provides in the patches folder.
Please git-buildpackage with the --pristine-tar flag. This should fix
this, IIRC.
