Not sure what happened here, because now the game works. But this may have been related to xorg, actually, because it started working again after upgrading xserver-common to 2:1.10.2-1+wheezy1. Prior to this update, neither supertuxkart nor other OpenGL worked (oolite, e.g.). All of this may be just coincidence, of course.
Anyway, this particular bug should be closed, as the problem is no longer there (for whatever reason).
