No, $DISPLAY is fine, but the auth cookies have hostname in them, and if it's changed, applications can no longer connect to X. I just tried to change the hostname on a friend's Ubuntu box, and it did not prevent the apps from working there, but they said something about being unable to connect to X and trying session manager instead (and it was slower).
