Well, I do have "an udevd process" around, but two others as well:
$ pidof udevd
30098 30097 30096

If I do it again, all udevd stop, but nothing changes. dmesg gives me:
Jun 14 14:53:57 * udevd[31461]: bind failed: Address already in use
Jun 14 14:53:57 * udevd[31461]: error binding udev control socket

(with s/<hostname>/*/)

Upgrading udev also removed systemd which was running as init, which
might explain the breakage. I'm trying to restart now and see what
happens.
