Have to ask: is this an April Fools joke?

I'm confused, because it looks like you're still running the stock kernel,
Linux 2.6.32-5-686, so I don't have any idea why kernel-package would be to 
blame for why the wlan0 device wouldn't show up.

Do you have the 'firmware-iwlwifi' package installed, by chance?  If not -- 
you need it, and it won't show up in the package list unless you've added 
"non-free" after "main" for the Debian repository listed in 
/etc/apt/sources.list.  That's one thing that would cause the wlan0 device not 
to show up.
