After having let this sit for a while, I'll just argue that, in the spirit of the principle of least surprise you might just rip the symlink feature out for now and maybe replace it with a mechanism that can call a script with all the relevant information: local interface, shelf, slot, MAC whitelist. (Did I forget anything?)
