After having let this sit for a while, I'll just argue that, in the
spirit of the principle of least surprise you might just rip the symlink
feature out for now and maybe replace it with a mechanism that can call
a script with all the relevant information: local interface, shelf,
slot, MAC whitelist. (Did I forget anything?)

Then provide something identical or similar to the current default
behavior as an example, add a warning, and let system administrators
decide how they want to shoot themselves in the foot. :-)
