Ack, many apologies.  djview did indeed invoke, correctly, djview4 (I
had checked this!); but there were some libraries around from a
previous manual install.
(e.g.
/usr/local/lib/libdjvulibre.la
/usr/local/lib/libdjvulibre.so
/usr/local/lib/libdjvulibre.so.21
/usr/local/lib/libdjvulibre.so.21.2.0  )

I removed these, and it works fine.
