Package: oprofile-source
Severity: serious

The way this package is built is not accepteble. Please fix the build
system to something that works with just dpkg-buildpackage.

Subject: Explanation

Michael Banck:

The package builds fine like that, it's just the additional kernel
modules which need to be built by a different script, AIUI

Steve Langasek:

well, here's the thing. the source package does build if you run
the normal debian/rules commands; but those binary packages that are
built do *not* include the kernel-specific modules packages. So you
have to go through an additional step to build the per-kernel module
packages, which are not listed in debian/control but are present in
  the archive.

me:

  We cannot support this security-wise.

Apart from that the package apparently fails to build from source
  (FTBFS) if

    make -f debian/rules build
    sudo make -f debian/rules binary

doesn't produce all required binary packages that should end up in
  the archive.

  This is surely release-critical.

Regards,

        Joey

Package: oprofile
Version: 0.9.1-3

To clarify, there are two parts to oprofile:

1) A kernel module that either (a) is already provided as part of the
standard Debian kernel images for all 2.6 kernels, or (b) must be
built by the user for 2.2 or 2.4 Linux kernels.

2) A series of commands to actually collect and analyze performance
data. All of these commands execute in user space, not in kernel
   space.

What this bug is asking for is that a process be put in place to
automatically build the oprofile kernel modules for 2.2 or 2.4
kernels -- item 1(b) from above (the user space commands of item
2 above are not affected). We highly recommend instead moving to
a Linux 2.6 kernel -- the versions of the oprofile module in 2.6
kernels contain more functionality, are more robust, and can more
easily help find performance issues.

If you must use an older kernel, please use the 'oprofile-source'
package and either 'make-kpkg' or 'module-assistant' to build your
own oprofile kernel module.
