This error is thrown deep down in the library stack that Gnumeric builds on; as Gnumeric builds on Gtk+ rather than use X libraries directly, it is unlikely this is the result of a bug in Gnumeric itself. Are you using Compiz? Are you using a custom Gtk theme? Can you reproduce the crashes with a freshly created user account?
