usually, I tend to prefer debugging issues when they're encountered,
but if nobody has time to do so, yeah, that could be a workaround.

I'd suggest contacting buildd admins ($a...@buildd.d.o), asking them
to make sure chroots are uptodate, and to perform a give back. You can
also request help from the porters (debian-$a...@l.d.o for most of
them) if that doesn't help.

If that doesn't work out, going the way you proposed should do the
job.
