I can't speak for the maintainer, but I'd prefer if this change is not reverted. That should reveal the most serious issues, but not all of the bugs. I can run checkbashisms on all the source packages but I would need some help to process the results. I've some tools to process the results, generate the reports, etc; but they were designed to process results from the binary packages, not source. I probably won't have time to process the results myself in the next two-three weeks.
