I can't speak for the maintainer, but I'd prefer if this change is not reverted.
LINENO is required by POSIX and was the last, major, missing piece.

That should reveal the most serious issues, but not all of the bugs.

I can run checkbashisms on all the source packages but I would need
some help to process the results. I've some tools to process the
results, generate the reports, etc; but they were designed to process
results from the binary packages, not source.
I probably won't have time to process the results myself in the next
two-three weeks.
