Hi Qi,
with the current Debian package of mail-notification, it is not possible
to build from modified sources: After editing the .gob files in src/, it
will say:

Just installing gob2 does not help, because the gob files are too old for the
gob2 package in Debian:

To fix this, you have to build-depend on gob2 and patch the .gob files to
compile again, and remove the build/ directory as shipped by upstream in your
clean target. See this patch for similar changes done to link-monitor-applet by
the same author:
