The solution mentioned by Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña on a somewhat
older and resolved but similar bug (#481119) brings my unlock dialog back:

gconftool --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_dialog_theme "" --type string

This GConf key was previously set to the "default" string.

Please note I'm using the XMonad as the GNOME window manager, and did
not test it with Metacity yet.

Bye,
