This bug was fixed in version 1.4.3-4lenny1 that is currently available in stable-proposed-updates and will be included in the next point release. Starting mpg123 as "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/mpg123 mpg123 (...)" is a quick workaround that doesn't require a package upgrade.
