There hasn't been much progress on the upstream side regarding a major update to make Caret compatible with recent VTK versions. As a result Caret remains severely broken. The Debian maintainer's evaluation of the required patch made him conclude that it would not be resonable to patch it for VTK compatibility, since the patch would need to be quite intrusive and the potential for significant undesired side-effects is high.
Information from the lab developing Caret indicates that upstream is evaluating ways how to get it in shape for the future (including major overhaul or reimplementation). Hope remains, but so far nothing happened.
