I am an xscreensaver user and I didn't know anything about autostart
this morning. I was pretty annoyed to realize that the last upgrade
broke my screensaver without notice, and caused my session not to lock
when I asked it to etc.

Also, here in gnome there is a dialog in System > Preferences > Startup
applications, which allows to configure autostart I'm founding out, if
I understand correctly? If you don't want xscreensaver to start, just
untick the box.

So I find pretty spurious your claims about my being better off without
autostart. Thankfully by now I learned to check README.Debian files,
and I found instructions to fix it by myself, but it would be great if
it could work out of the box for any clueless user. Perhaps a debconf
dialog could help?

Regards,
