12/18 contains an entry with a German umlaut in it. The file should be UTF-8,
please check with the file command. Also do you have a UTF-8 version of your
locale installed? How does grep show 12/17 and 12/18 in calendar.borthday?

The packages contains much more than just calendar. There is no justification
whatsoever to make this grave.
