Package: binutils
Version: 2.19.51.20090714-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi Matthias,

I have been fighting with this for a few days now, but I think I finally
found the culprit...

I have a couple of diskless machines and I build custom kernels for
them. A couple of days ago I updated my kernel build machine to the
latest packages in unstable. The update brought in new gcc and binutils
packages. After I used those to build a new kernel for one of the
diskless machines the machine would not boot anymore -- after fetching
the kernel and the initrd image, the machine would spontaneously reboot
right after displaying "Uncompressing kernel... done", or would just
hang there.

It took me a while to figure out the change that introduced the problem
but after downgrading one package at a time I finally tracked the
problem down to binutils_2.19.51.20090714-1: building my kernel with
binutils_2.19.51.20090714-1 results in the problem described above and
building my kernel with binutils_2.19.1-1 (currently in testing) results
in a bootable kernel.

I thought I'd report this right away to prevent this binutils from
entering testing.

There were no error messages or anything from the kernel; just the
spontaneous reboot or hang. No configuration kernel configuration
changes either; the only difference in a working test case and a
non-working test case was building with different versions of binutils.

There's nothing special about the PC that had the problem booting the
kernel. It's an old machine that has never had problems with Linux.

I'll be out of pocket for a couple of days, in case you need more
information and try to reach me.

Cheers,

Eloy Paris.-
