on ia64, texlive-base is installed and trying to be removed in the
initial apt-get run, although its dependencies texlive-doc-base,
tex-common, texlive-base-bin, and texlive-common are not present.

How do you come to the conclusion that this could be a problem in a tex*
package?

$ apt-cache show texlive-base
Package: texlive-base
Priority: optional
Section: tex
Installed-Size: 17372
Maintainer: Debian TeX Maintainers <debian-tex-ma...@lists.debian.org>
Architecture: all
Version: 2007.dfsg.1-5
Replaces: texlive-pdfetex
Depends: texlive-doc-base (>= 2007), tex-common (>= 1.11), texlive-base-bin (>=
2007-13), texlive-common (>= 2007)
Recommends: dvipdfmx (>= 1:20050831-1), lmodern (>= 0.93.3-1)
Conflicts: texinfo (<< 4.8)

Regards, Frank
