Hi,

While this is not an ucf bug, I would like to get an idea what

So, ucf has not yet been configured. Presumably, this means that
packages that ucf depends on might not have been configured either.

Note: ucf says explicitly that it needs debconf (>= 1.5.19) for
 it to work.

Hmm. Nothing has been installed yet -- so the new version of ucf
is already on the system. I wish we had logs from the initial install
 where the problems first appeared.

This function has been provided in debconf (>= 1.5.19), but
not, apparently, in the denconf version you have.

And there lies the problem. You have the Etch version of
debconf, but the Lenny version of ucf, and this version of debconf
 _will_ cause ucf to crash.

So, this is not ucf's fault, it did say it needed a newer
debconf. The issue is, what were you doing that, as you put it,
caused an upgrade from etch to lenny? Depending on those
circumstances, we might discover if there is something we can pin the
 blame on.
