To speed thing up, let me reply. I also found this problem, after the updating session yesterday. Similar things happen, pressing Alt-F8 does not help me to get out of the black screen, only a reset does.
Right now I have just uninstalled splashy, as the other critical bug of not starting/stopping init scripts affected me too. This led to hal not starting properly (I guess), touchpad not working etc. Purging splashy (or better, moving /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh out of the way) solved all these problems. Sjoerd
