I've tried /usr/share/sgml/docbook/stylesheet/dsssl/modular/images/callouts/9.eps from the docbook-dsssl package and it worked fine, but it seems to be a postscript document. Can you attach a sample file that you can't open? Can you also check if it works with evince 2.22 from testing? Cheers, Emilio
