After upgrading from gtk 2.12 to 2.14, all icons (both SVG and PNG) were displayed as a page with a folded corner, in the center of which was a square with a red cross. In neither case was shared-mime-info installed. Upgrading to 2.16, which forced shared-mime-info to be installed, caused icons to be displayed again. The aptitude logs of the upgrades follow.
