Package: imapproxy
Version: 1.2.6-4
Severity: normal

dist-upgrade from etch to lenny did not work for this package. During upgrade
imapproxy failed with:

Setting up imapproxy (1.2.6-4) ...
Starting IMAP proxy: invoke-rc.d: initscript imapproxy, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing imapproxy (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 imapproxy

The new package overwrote the existing /etc/imapproxy.conf file and used the
debconf setting for imapproxy/imap-server and replaced server_hostname with
'localhost'. There was no warning of this replacement. This resulted
in the startup of imapproxy to fail and thus the packing installation.

Corrected wth:

dpkg-reconfigure -plow imapproxy

to set imapproxy/imap-server to the remote server fqdn, and then:

dpkg --configure --pending

My debconf setting ignores questions with priority of 'high' or lower. Yes, I
should change that.

This is on a web server that hosts a webmail interface for the real mail server.
There is no imap server running on the localhost.

I suggest warning if the existing configuration file is overwritten and that
imapproxy/imap-server have a higer debconf priority.

This appears to be a duplicate of

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=505828

but as it was closed without any resolution, I'm submitting a new bug. It took
me over two hours to find the solution in the closed bug report.
