Hi Ondrej,
I certainly am not surprised that it doesn't work given how long it has
had to bitrot in the NEW queue, but I just upgraded my i386 test machine
to the latest sid and installed from sid, and it did work:
I'll try to reproduce again in a clean environment this weekend.

Hi,
Tim, first let me congratulate you for getting sagemath to Debian, great job!
Currently the i386 package segfaults on my system:
$ sage
----------------------------------------------------------------------
| SAGE Version 3.0.5, Release Date: 2008-07-11 |
| Type notebook() for the GUI, and license() for information. |
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Unhandled SIGSEGV: A segmentation fault occured in SAGE.
This probably occured because a *compiled* component
of SAGE has a bug in it (typically accessing invalid memory)
or is not properly wrapped with _sig_on, _sig_off.
You might want to run SAGE under gdb with 'sage -gdb' to debug this.
SAGE will now terminate (sorry).
------------------------------------------------------------
/usr/lib/sagemath/local/bin/sage-sage: line 216: 5137 Segmentation
fault sage-ipython "$@" -i -c "$SAGE_STARTUP_COMMAND;"
But I suspect it's just because the sagemath in Debian is old, so
packaging new upstream should fix it.
